DD214 General Information

DD214 forms are voluntarily filed by the veteran.  There is no legal or military requirement that the veteran file their papers, so this database is NOT a record of every veteran who lived in Muskegon County.

DD214’s are accessible by the public after the veteran has been discharged 60 years or more. MCGS has indexed the DD214 records starting for those discharged in 1960 and PRIOR. For example, for career veterans who may have served in WWII but were also in service in Vietnam, thier DD214s are NOT included, as their FINAL discharge date has not yet been at least 60 years.

DD214 records are not consistent from war to war, year to year, or even month to month. Depending on the time period and which branch of the military they served in, the information is different and many times incomplete. For example, place of enlistment is not always noted, date of birth is also not consistently included.  Any blanks in our index are due to missing data on the form itself.

Not all veterans filed the DD214 form – some submitted their discharge letter only.  Although the database is referenced as the DD214 Index, it includes many other types of documentation.

Sex is almost never noted. Race is also rarely noted. Indexers have not made any assumptions of sex or race due to the veteran’s name.
