History

In 1880 Oakwood Cemetery was opened.  Much has been done since to improve it.  It contains forty acres and is laid out squarely with a large rounding driveway and a circle in the center, where a fountain is some day to be place.  Only half of the forty acres is really laid out, thus taking it to the center of the fountain circle.  Old settlers remember (where Oakwood now lies) magnificent oak trees, with trunks three feet thick.  Who removed them, no one seems to know.

Oakwood Cemetery was purchased of Hugh Park.  Most of the lots in the half laid out are now sold and the city will soon be obliged to open the other part.  The lots sell for $15 a lot and $7.50 a half lot.  The lots in the Lakeside cemetery sell for $5.00 a lot.  Evergreen is practically closed now, only an occasional lot being sold at a private sale by people who have moved away.  Various organizations own blocks in both Evergreen and Oakwood.  Some of them are in City Fire Department, the Knights of Pythias, Sons of Veterans, Grand Lodge F. & A. M., Muskegon Lodge No. 92, I.O.O.F., cigar Makers Union, Union Veteran Union, R.S. Thomson Company, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church (three lots), Holland Christian Reformed Church, Phil Kearny Post No. 7, G.A.R. (three blocks and one lot), Scandinavian Aid Society, Home of the Friendless and the Vessel Loaders’ Union has one lot.

One block is reserved for the remains from the old cemetery, although many of these lie buried in Evergreen.
