History
Mona View is situated on a wooded height above Little Black Creek nestled in the South-East corner of the city limits of Muskegon Heights, Michigan. This rolling wooded plateau is ideally suited to cemetery use. Its curving roads and sloping terraced hillsides add to the natural beauty of the cemetery which is rapidly taking its place among the leading municipally owned cemeteries in the country.
Mona View Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Muskegon Height as a non-profit service to its citizens. In the year 1919 some very wise and prudent City Fathers decided to purchase the present site which at that time was an 80 acre farm. The purchase price of the land and initial development costs totaled some $55,000 and was approved by the Heights Council. The first interment took place in the early months of 1920 so Mona View is considered a relatively new cemetery.
Growth and development in the early years was very slow. The first extensive development in the early years was very slow. The first extensive development took place in the late 1930’s when all of the field stone walls, terraces and stairways were built utilizing W.P.A. (Workers Progress Administration) labor which was initiated by President Franklin d. Roosevelt to help lift our country out of the great depression.
In the years to follow, development moved rapidly and Mona View became known as one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the State of Michigan.
