JEANNOT, William E.
Obituary
Tuesday,
October 4, 1938
W. E. JEANNOT, LONG ILL,
DIES WAS PROMINENT BUSINESS LEADER,
MANUFACTURER AND CIVIC FORCE MANY YEARS William E. Jeannot, 72 years old,
former president ofthe West Michigan Steel Foundry company and of the Eagle
Foundry and Machine company, a prominent manufacturer, businessman, banker and
member of fraternal and civic organizations, died today at his home, 1601
Jefferson street, Muskegon after a long illness. Mr. Jeannot had been suffering
from ill health since 1930 and during the years his condition had become
progressively more serious. He
became critically ill last Friday. Few residents of Muskegon probably have enjoyed as varied and successful
a career as Mr. Jeannot, which included lumbering, business administration,
mining and manufacturing. His
ability to concentrate and master details quickly were considered outstanding
qualities which enabled him to forge to the front in his various endeavors. Mr. Jeannot, who enjoyed a
brilliant scholastic record and was a medalist at the University of Notre Dame,
continued throughout life the active, constructive pace he set there. He made good at his first job, in the
employ of his father's lumber company, and it was the same thereafter, in
railroading, lumber, mining and last of all in manufacturing. Despite his busy years, he found
time for civic affairs, and was among Greater Muskegon's most zealous
friends. During the World
war, Mr. Jeannot originated an idea of an agency for centralizing Muskegon
county's war funds, and as a result the Muskegon county War Chest association
came into being. He served as its
first chairman. Surplus funds it
held after the war were the foundation of the beautiful Causeway Memorial
park. The idea of the War Chest was
carried over into its successor , the Community Chest, which unifies the support
of local charitable social service, and other communitiy enterprises and
organizations.
